Starting next year, "bottle-to-bottle" recycling will begin in earnest in Korea. The government will mandate the use of 10% recycled materials for beverage companies using more than 5,000 tons of PET bottles annually, effective January 1, 2026. This percentage will be gradually raised to 30% by 2030, and the scope of eligible companies will be expanded to include those using more than 1,000 tons of PET bottles per year. Currently, physical recycling accounts for over 90% of the PET recycling market; however, since the physical properties of physically recycled PET deteriorate with repeated recycling, eventually requiring disposal, this approach is closer to delaying disposal than promoting resource circulation. Considering the volume of waste resulting from quality degradation, it is highly likely that securing raw materials will become difficult as the mandatory recycling ratio increases. Chemical recycling can serve as a more fundamental solution, as it allows for the recycling of waste that is difficult to process through physical recycling, such as contaminated or mixed plastics.
